July 10 (THEWILL) — Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has revealed that missing out on a transfer to Liverpool remains one of the biggest regrets of his professional career.
The 30-year-old, who recently joined Ligue 1 side Paris FC after leaving FC Nantes, said a proposed move to Anfield came closest to materialising during his time in Belgium but ultimately failed to happen.
Speaking in an interview with Urban Dwell Sport, Simon admitted that intense transfer speculation affected his mentality at the time and led to a decline in his performances.
The Nigerian international disclosed that Liverpool were among several clubs interested in signing him, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton, Fulham, Hull City, and French club Lyon.
Reflecting on that period, Simon said he made the mistake of believing that lowering his performance level would encourage his club to sell him because of the number of teams pursuing his signature.
The experienced winger acknowledged that the decision backfired and described it as an important lesson in his career, urging young footballers not to allow transfer rumours or uncertainty over their futures to distract them on the pitch.
Despite the failed move to the Premier League, Simon has gone on to build an impressive career, featuring in Belgium, Spain, and France while becoming one of Nigeria’s most reliable players.
The winger has earned 98 caps for the Super Eagles and is now just two appearances away from becoming the fifth Nigerian to reach the 100-cap milestone.
If he achieves the feat, he will join an elite group that includes Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo, and Alex Iwobi.
Although Simon has enjoyed success at club and international level, he admitted that the opportunity to play for Liverpool remains a chapter he still looks back on with regret.
