May 15, (THEWILL) – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has invited former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over alleged abuse of the naira.
Although the Commission has yet to officially confirm the invitation, a source within the anti-graft agency disclosed that the letter was delivered earlier in the week.
The source, however, clarified that the invitation is part of a routine investigative process and not an arrest warrant.
THEWILL had reported on Monday that the EFCC was reacting to a viral video showing Tompolo being lavishly sprayed with bundles of N1,000 notes during what appeared to be his 54th birthday celebration in April. The Commission had stated, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
The Central Bank of Nigeria has consistently emphasized that spraying or defacing the naira is a criminal offense punishable under Nigerian law. In recent months, the EFCC has intensified its clampdown on such violations, pledging to enforce financial discipline regardless of status or background.
Several high-profile figures, including crossdresser Bobrisky, music promoter E-Money, actress Iyabo Ojo, and comedian AY, have recently been questioned for similar acts of naira mutilation.
