August 21, (THEWILL) — The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested eight suspected members of a human trafficking syndicate operating between Nigeria and Ghana.
The agency also rescued 29 victims, mostly foreign nationals from West African countries, during a raid on a popular apartment in a secluded part of Gwagwalada, Abuja.
NAPTIP’s Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye, said the operation followed intelligence provided by the Ghanaian Embassy in Abuja.
He explained that the embassy had alerted the agency about a Ghanaian national who was allegedly recruited under false pretences, transported to Nigeria, and subjected to exploitation.
The embassy subsequently sought NAPTIP’s intervention under bilateral cooperation agreements and anti-trafficking frameworks.
The agency noted that the latest breakthrough came just days after it disrupted another trafficking arrangement in Abuja, where 25 women being trafficked to Saudi Arabia for domestic exploitation were rescued.
