July 12, (THEWILL) — Nasarawa Amazons have been crowned champions of the 2026 Women’s President Cup after defeating Heartland Queens 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the closely contested final saw Heartland Queens take the lead before Nasarawa Amazons fought back in the second half to force the match into a penalty shootout.
The Lafia-based side held their nerve from the spot, converting four penalties to Heartland Queens’ three to lift the trophy and secure their third Women’s President Federation Cup title.
The victory also served as redemption for the Amazons, who finished runners-up in last year’s final.
Reacting after the triumph, Nasarawa Amazons captain Confidence Nwoha credited the team’s resilience and the motivation provided by the coaching staff.
“We thank God for the coach that we have. She is always there to encourage us psychologically. Last year, we lost in the final, and we were determined that this year would be our year,” Nwoha said.
Heartland Queens captain Chimebere Opara accepted the defeat but remained optimistic about the club’s future, while appealing for continued support from the Imo State Government.
“I am not happy that we lost, but I know better days lie ahead. I appeal to the Imo State Government to continue to support us and believe in us. Next year, we will do better,” Opara said.
Among the dignitaries present at the final were Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau and the Chief of Staff to the Delta State Government, John Erijo, who represented Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, praised the players, coaches, and technical crew for their commitment throughout the competition.
Yakubu revealed that Governor Abdullahi Sule, despite being unable to attend because of official engagements, maintained regular contact with the team to encourage them during their Federation Cup campaign.
He also disclosed that the governor had approved the construction of sports infrastructure across the three senatorial districts of Nasarawa State as part of efforts to boost sports development.
The commissioner assured the players and coaching staff of the state government’s continued support as the club looks to build on its latest domestic success.
