February 24, (THEWILL) — The leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly has announced a postponement of plenary resumption to allow committees conclude ongoing scrutiny of the 2026 budget proposals by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Acting Clerk to the House of Representatives disclosed this in a statement, noting that the adjustment became necessary as the budget defence exercise remains substantially incomplete.
According to the statement, the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives directed the postponement to enable committees to finalise engagements with relevant government agencies and ensure a comprehensive examination of budget submissions.
Plenary, which was earlier scheduled to resume on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, will now reconvene on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
Sidi explained that the decision reflects the National Assembly’s commitment to a thorough legislative review process aimed at strengthening fiscal accountability and improving oversight of public expenditure. He added that the leadership regretted any inconvenience the adjustment might cause and urged lawmakers to utilise the intervening period to further refine discussions and contributions toward the ongoing budget defence process.
The postponement is expected to provide additional time for committees to complete sectoral reviews ahead of plenary consideration of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
