April 30, (THEWILL) – In a bid to enhance aviation security in line with global best practices, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Monday, April 29, 2025, hosted a high-level stakeholders’ symposium in Lagos with the theme, “Fundamentality of Aviation Security in Achieving the Safe-Skies Goal.”
The event brought together key figures in Nigeria’s aviation and security sectors, including the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana; Chief Executive Officers of aviation agencies; former NCAA Director-General, Dr. Harold Demuren; representatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA); the Nigerian Air Force (NAF); the Nigerian Police Force (NPF); and other critical stakeholders, including service providers and security agencies.
In his welcome address, the Director-General of the NCAA and host of the event, Capt. Chris Najomo, said the symposium was not just an academic exercise but a platform for strategic collaboration, innovation, and actionable solutions.
Najomo said, “The aviation industry remains the lifeline of global connectivity, enabling commerce, cultural exchange, and economic development.
“However, these opportunities come with evolving threats such as cyberattacks, terrorism, insider threats, and unmanned aerial systems—as well as the complexities of cargo, passenger, and airport security.”
He stressed that the dynamic threat environment demands effective countermeasures, which must be implemented by competent personnel.
“This is why, as an aviator, I believe strongly in the doctrine of training, training, and more training,” he added.
Najomo further highlighted the importance of vigilance, collaboration, technological innovation, compliance, and adherence to international standards among stakeholders to ensure a secure and resilient aviation sector.
Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, commended the NCAA for its foresight in organizing the symposium. She noted that the initiative would foster greater security consciousness, strengthen collaboration, and enhance aviation security governance across the country in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 17 standards.
