April 27, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that it has no preferred presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections, dismissing as false and misleading reports that it is courting former governors of Anambra and Kano States, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to run on its platform.
In a statement issued late Sunday, April 26, and signed by its National Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party attributed the reports to a “rogue” X account impersonating its official handle and spreading unauthorised information capable of misleading the public.
The party ckaried it has no formal or informal arrangement with any individual or group regarding the 2027 elections, stressing that its ticket remains open to all Nigerians interested in contesting under its platform.
“Please ignore any report, either in the traditional media or social media, claiming that the Nigerian Democratic Congress is lobbying any specific individual or group to contest the election on the platform of the party. This is contrary to insinuations made by a rogue X account parodying the verified handle of the NDC,” the statement read.
The NDC explained that the impersonating account mimics its branding, including colours and logo, in a bid to appear authentic, but emphasised that its content does not reflect the party’s official position.
It noted that it had earlier alerted the public to the existence of the fake account and reiterated that any information emanating from it should be disregarded.
While conceding that the account may be operated by an “enthusiastic supporter or any other person,” the party maintained that such actions remain unauthorised and do not represent its views or decisions.
The party urged journalists, media organisations and the general public to verify all information relating to its activities through its verified communication channels, warning that the spread of unverified claims could undermine public trust and distort political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity and internal democracy, the NDC said it operates an open-door policy that allows all Nigerians equal opportunity to participate in its activities and contest elections without bias or preferential treatment.
“We invite every Nigerian desirous of positive change and every lover of multi-party democracy to join the NDC, work for the party and feel free to contest elections on its platform.
“This appeal is especially so for women and persons with disability. For the NDC is a party for all,” the statement added.
The party also expressed appreciation for the growing support it has received within a short period of its formation, describing itself as an ideological platform committed to national service, transparency and citizen-driven governance.
