April 21, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian Exchange Limited has announced the expansion of its daily trading hours to run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (WAT), effective Monday, April 27, 2026, in a move aimed at deepening market liquidity, improving price discovery, and widening investor access.
The reform, approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission, shifts the market opening time earlier from 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and extends the closing time from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., marking a notable adjustment to the Exchange’s trading structure.
According to the Exchange, the extended trading window is expected to provide greater flexibility for investors while allowing the market to respond more effectively to market-moving information throughout the day.
The change is also designed to support broader participation across the Nigerian capital market.
Market officials note that the initiative builds on the momentum generated by Nigeria’s recent reclassification to Frontier Market status by FTSE Russell, a development seen as strengthening the global visibility of the Nigerian equities market and improving its appeal to both domestic and international investors.
The development reflects continued regulatory collaboration aimed at advancing capital market reforms and strengthening the competitiveness of Nigeria’s financial markets.
The Exchange also noted that the decision follows extensive consultations with market stakeholders to ensure operational readiness ahead of the implementation date.
