January 13, (THEWILL) — The Government of the Republic of Niger has unveiled a new package of tax reforms under its 2026 budget proposals, aimed at boosting domestic revenue generation, strengthening national security operations and reducing the country’s dependence on external assistance.
The fiscal measures, announced by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), introduce fresh taxes and revised levies on selected consumer goods and imports as part of a broader strategy to enhance financial self-reliance and safeguard national stability.
Under the new framework, luxury and selected consumer goods will attract additional charges, with refrigerators taxed at 10 percent, while vehicles will be subject to levies of up to five percent. The government has also increased so-called “sin taxes”, raising duties on cigarettes to seven percent and beer and other alcoholic beverages to 12 percent.
In addition, import tariffs have been adjusted upward on certain categories of goods, including plastic bags, as authorities seek to regulate imports while improving revenue mobilisation. A 0.5 percent ECOWAS import levy has also been introduced on goods imported from member states of the regional bloc.
Officials said the new tax measures are specifically designed to generate additional funding for counter-terrorism and internal security operations, while ensuring the continued provision of essential public services. The reforms, according to the government, reflect a deliberate effort to strengthen Niger’s fiscal base and lessen reliance on foreign aid.
The authorities emphasised that the tax changes were designed to strike a balance between revenue needs and economic considerations, and will be implemented in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Members of the public, business operators and importers have been urged to familiarise themselves with the updated tax schedule and ensure full compliance as the new measures take effect.
