May 29 (THEWILL) — The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on the occasion of its National Day, celebrated annually on May 28, while reaffirming both countries’ shared commitment to African unity, peace, and economic integration.
Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the celebration represents a defining moment in the history of Ethiopia as Africa’s oldest independent nation and a symbol of resilience, sovereignty, and national renewal.
Ebienfa stated that Nigeria acknowledges Ethiopia’s enduring contributions to the advancement of continental solidarity, its strategic role as host of the headquarters of the African Union, and its consistent commitment to dialogue, regional peace, multilateral diplomacy, and African integration.
According to him, both Nigeria and Ethiopia, as two of Africa’s most populous and influential nations, have continued to maintain a strong and strategic relationship rooted in shared historical ties and a common vision for a peaceful and prosperous continent.
“As two of Africa’s most populous and influential nations, and founding members of several continental institutions, Nigeria and Ethiopia share a unique bond of friendship, solidarity, and a common vision for a peaceful and prosperous continent. Our bilateral relationship is robust and multifaceted, anchored in a shared commitment to continental stability and economic revitalization,” he said.
The spokesperson further emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to deepening economic cooperation with Ethiopia, particularly in areas that reflect the strategic importance of both nations within the African economic landscape.
He highlighted ongoing private sector collaboration, notably the investments by Dangote Industries in Ethiopia’s cement and fertilizer sectors, describing it as a major milestone in strengthening economic ties between both countries.
“We commend the ongoing collaboration between our private sectors, notably the transformative investments by Dangote Industries in Ethiopia’s cement and fertilizer sectors.
“Furthermore, we look forward to finalising agreements on broader collaboration and partnerships in other key sectors for the mutual benefit of both countries,” Ebienfa stated.
He added that Nigeria remains firmly committed to supporting Ethiopia as it advances its domestic reforms and continues to play a stabilizing role in the Horn of Africa, stressing that both nations’ cooperation will further deepen under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
