December 02, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s aviation sector marked a historic milestone on Tuesday as the Federal Ministry of Aviation officially launched the country’s first-ever Nigeria International Airshow at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The event attracted global aerospace manufacturers, defence officials, aviation investors, and enthusiasts, placing Nigeria firmly on the international aviation map.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) took centre stage on the opening day with precision flypasts and coordinated static aircraft displays.
Executed by highly trained aircrews, the demonstrations drew international attention and highlighted Nigeria’s growing capabilities in modern air operations.
Representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Yaro Abdullahi, delivered the keynote address.
He described Nigeria as a naturally strategic aviation hub at the crossroads of Africa and key global air routes. AVM Abdullahi highlighted the country’s youthful population, expanding domestic aviation market, and advancing technological potential as drivers for future growth.
He stressed that Nigeria must accelerate investments in airport modernisation, develop robust Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, adopt digital aviation systems, and revive a competitive national carrier to fully unlock the sector’s potential.
A highlight of NAF’s participation was a ceremonial flypast featuring an Agusta 109 Light Utility Helicopter carrying the National Flag and the Nigeria International Airshow emblem across the Abuja skyline.
The display of agility, patriotism, and airpower excellence captivated spectators and reaffirmed Nigeria’s emerging status in global military aviation.
With the theme, “Redefining the Aviation Industry Through Investment and Global Engagement,” the debut Nigeria International Airshow marks a defining moment in the evolution of the country’s aviation industry.
