December 31, (THEWILL) – Nigeria has expressed readiness to engage in dialogue with Niger Republic following recent statements by the country’s Transitional President, Abdourahman Tchiani.
In a Christmas Day broadcast on Wednesday, General Tchiani claimed that France was planning to set up a “terrorist operational centre” in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Sokoto. He also alleged that France was providing financial backing to Nigeria to set up a military base in the northeastern state of Borno “under the guise of combating terrorism”. He said Niger had received credible intelligence about the alleged plans, including efforts to sabotage Niger’s oil pipeline and agriculture.
Speaking on Tuesday, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria said it has opted for dialogue as the foundation for sustainable solutions while reaffirming commitment to ECOWAS principles that barred member states from actions that undermine Niger’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
The minister further reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to peace and stability in West Africa, noting that Nigeria and Niger, as neighbouring countries and brothers, share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties.
Tuggar extended invitation to Niger’s leaders to engage in constructive dialogue to address shared mutual concerns.
He urged regional and international partners to support the reconciliation and stability effort instead of exacerbating divisions.
