March 11, (THEWILL) — Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, has resigned from membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying Nigeria requires a stronger political platform to drive national development.
Tambuwal conveyed his decision in a letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward of Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
In the letter, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives announced that his resignation from the PDP took immediate effect, explaining that the decision followed deep reflection and extensive consultations with political associates and supporters.
He cited persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and widening divisions within the party as key factors in his decision to leave the opposition party.
According to him, the ongoing conflicts within the PDP have weakened the unity and sense of direction that once defined the party.
Tambuwal, however, expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him to serve the country in various capacities.
He noted that under the party’s platform, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as Governor of Sokoto State, positions through which he contributed to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Following his resignation, the lawmaker formally joined the African Democratic Congress, along with several of his political associates and supporters. He said the move was guided by his conviction that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform anchored on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness and a clear commitment to national development.
Tambuwal also reaffirmed his commitment to the service of Nigeria and pledged to continue promoting the ideals of democracy, justice and national unity.
