Tinubu with Airtel Chairman

February 28 (THEWILL) – Nigeria has announced plans to review its telecommunications regulatory framework and operational guidelines to reflect global best practices, with a strong emphasis on infrastructure protection.

President Bola Tinubu made this known on Thursday during a meeting at the State House with an Airtel delegation led by Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal.

He assured that his administration remains committed to creating an enabling environment for business and is open to adopting successful models from other economies to drive growth in the sector.

“The entire ecosystem will be further examined, and if there is anything we can learn from India, we are ready to do so. We are not ashamed to replicate what works in other climes. Nigeria is too important for us not to embrace revolutionary policies that make business thrive. I am pro-business and will continue to be,” Tinubu stated.

A statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, noted that tax reforms are being designed to foster a more favorable investment climate.

“We will collaborate with tax administrators to ensure policies that encourage growth and opportunities,” Tinubu added.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, expressed gratitude to the President for his continued support of the telecom industry. He highlighted the recent approval of fibre optic and undersea cables as critical national assets, adding that the Office of the National Security Adviser has commenced implementation and enforcement of the law to ensure their protection.

Airtel’s Chairman, Sunil Mittal, commended Tinubu’s economic policies, describing them as bold and transformative. He compared Nigeria’s current reforms to those undertaken in India in the early 1990s, which, according to him, propelled the country into becoming a global economic powerhouse.

“When you took office, you made some promises, and given the country’s situation at the time, I was uncertain about how deep and far you could go. However, the decisive steps you have taken, including floating the naira and removing the petrol subsidy, are remarkable achievements recognized globally,” Mittal said.

He added that while the economic decisions were initially difficult, they were necessary for Nigeria’s long-term growth and stability.

Mittal further urged Nigerians with substantial investments abroad to consider reinvesting in the country, noting that confidence in the economy is gradually being restored.

“I have spoken with business leaders in Nigeria, and they are now feeling reassured. When they begin to reinvest, the economy will pick up rapidly,” he remarked.
