February 13, (THEWILL) — Nigeria has secured a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank, marking a historic achievement at the just-concluded 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union.
The Executive Council also extended Nigeria’s representation to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, the precursor to the African Central Bank. Nigerian officials say these milestones affirm the country’s technical capacity, economic significance, and commitment to Africa’s monetary integration agenda.
A statement personally signed on Friday by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, said the development underscores Nigeria’s strategic role in shaping Africa’s financial architecture and strengthens its influence in advancing continental economic integration.
On the peace and security front, Nigeria celebrated the successful election of candidates jointly agreed upon by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the AU Peace and Security Council. The outcome highlighted the cohesion and unity of ECOWAS member states and reflected the region’s shared commitment to stability and collective security across the continent.
Nigeria also demonstrated leadership in promoting democratic governance by hosting a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The session attracted ministers, senior officials, and delegates from across Africa and the international community, fostering dialogue on strengthening democratic institutions, inclusive governance, and collaborative regional approaches to sustaining democratic values.
Speaking on Nigeria’s achievements, Tuggar emphasized that the country remains committed to working collaboratively with AU member states and regional bodies to promote Africa’s shared prosperity and sustainable development.
The 39th Executive Council Session concluded with Nigeria’s enhanced influence across economic, financial, security, and governance structures of the AU, reaffirming its leadership role in advancing the continent’s integration and institutional development agenda.
