February 05, (THEWILL) — The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reiterated that Nigeria maintains full control over its national security and is cooperating with the United States in a transparent, policy-driven manner.
The clarification came amid reports of deployment of U.S. military personnel in the country, as well as a two-day high-level Working Group meeting between senior U.S. officials and their Nigerian counterparts at the Office of the National Security Adviser.
In a statement signed on Thursday by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the Defence Headquarters affirmed that the country’s partnership with the United States is long-standing, structured, and built on mutual respect, with a focus on capacity building and professional development.
It clarified that collaboration with the U.S. includes professional military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support, and strategic dialogue designed to address terrorism and other transnational threats. Officials said all engagements respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and operate within existing bilateral frameworks.
Key topics of discussion included proposals to strengthen cooperation mechanisms, improve coordination, enhance accountability in joint operations, and protect civilian populations while combating violent threats. These proposals are currently under review by the relevant Nigerian authorities.
The DHQ reassured Nigerians that all defence partnerships are guided by national interests, measurable outcomes, and the protection of Nigeria’s territorial integrity. “Engagements with international partners are guided strictly by national interest, measurable outcomes, and the protection of Nigeria’s sovereignty”, the statement read.
