BEVERLY HILLS, mArch 08, (THEWILL) – The Senate has cancelled its planned visit to the South African parliament to protest the xenophobic attacks meted out on Nigerians to allow for a single delegation from the Nigerian legislature to South Africa.
The Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, announced this decision of upper legislative chamber during a plenary session on Wednesday.
The House of Representatives had already nominated its leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, to lead five members of the lower legislative chamber to South Africa for the same reason.
They include: Nnenna Okeje, Sadiq Ibrahim, Henry Nwawuba, Nasiru Daura, and Shehu Musa.
Aggrieved South Africans have in recent times attacked Nigerians and their businesses in that country.
The Senate last Tuesday resolved to send a strong delegation to South Africa to protest against the attacks on Nigerians in the country.
The chamber took the decision after‎ a senator from Cross River North, Rose Oko, moved a motion urging her colleagues to intervene in the resurgence of xenophobic attacks.
