November 20, (THEWILL) — The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday designated the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as an international terrorist, following findings the court said were linked to alleged threats against the British High Commission in Nigeria.
Delivering a portion of his judgment in the terrorism case filed by the Federal Government, Justice James Omotosho held that evidence before the court indicated that Kanu made broadcasts expressing intent to bomb the British High Commission in Abuja and to kill the then British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing.
The judge noted that under international law, diplomatic premises such as embassies and high commissions are inviolable and cannot be invaded or harmed by a host country, stressing that any threat against such institutions constitutes a grave international security concern.
“By the nature of the threats issued and the targets identified, the defendant’s conduct falls squarely within the definition of international terrorism,” Justice Omotosho stated.
He added that the alleged threats transcended Nigeria’s domestic jurisdiction, given that diplomatic missions represent the sovereign territory of foreign states. The court said such conduct undermines international peace and breaches conventions protecting diplomatic personnel.
The designation formed part of the broader ruling on terrorism-related charges brought against the IPOB leader by the Federal Government. Kanu has consistently denied all allegations.
Security around the court premises was heightened as the judgment progressed, with operatives ensuring restricted movement in and out of the complex.
The court is expected to deliver the remaining components of its verdict in the coming sessions.
