October 06, (THEWILL) — The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), has said Nigeria’s next National Drug Control Master Plan (2026–2030) must explicitly address new and emerging threats in the drug trade.
Speaking at the opening of a five-day workshop in Niger State, Marwa said the new strategy should be “visionary yet practical; comprehensive yet targeted; and nationally owned yet regionally and globally aligned.”
He noted that evolving challenges such as synthetic drugs, dark web trafficking, poly-substance use, and illicit financial flows must be central to the next plan.
“We will identify what has worked, acknowledge the gaps, and design innovative pathways for the future,” Marwa said.
He urged stakeholders to bring their expertise and commitment to ensure the Master Plan becomes a collective vision to safeguard the health, security, and well-being of Nigerians.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development, Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, noted that Nigeria’s current drug control plan expires this year, making the formulation of a robust and evidence-based replacement essential.
The workshop, funded by ECOWAS and supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), brought together representatives from ECOWAS, UNODC, and key federal ministries, including Health, Education, and Agriculture.
