September 04, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s power generation rose to a three-year high of 5,313 megawatts on Monday, the Ministry of Power announced on Tuesday.
“The national grid, on Monday, hit a record high of 5,313MW, a record high in the last three years,” Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu confirmed in a statement.
The Minister urged Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to take more energy to prevent grid collapse as the grid’s frequency drops when power is produced and not picked by the Discos.
“When power is produced and not picked by the DisCos, it could lead to grid collapse as frequency drops. Efforts will be made to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy,” he said.
On Saturday, the Ministry said power generation that peaked at 5,170MW was ramped down by 1,400MW due to Discos’ energy rejection.
Earlier in May, the Nigerian government promised to generate 6,000 megawatts of electricity before the end of 2024.
