October 29, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s second national operator, Globacom Limited, has lost about 43 million subscribers, representing 69.20% of its customer base, industry statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), released for Q3 2024 revealed.

According to the latest data released on Monday, Globacom, which had 62.1 million active subscriptions as of March, slowed to 19.1 million subscriptions at the end of September, losing a whopping 43 million.

While 9mobile dropped to 3.6 million active subscriptions at the end of September from the 11.6 million subscription database in March 2024, MTN Nigeria lost 3.7 million subscriptions, as active subscriptions dropped to 78 million in September from 81.7 million in March.

On its part, Airtel Nigeria ended September with 53.7 million active subscriptions from the 63.3 million it recorded in March.

In all, total active subscriptions for the four mobile carriers (MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile) dropped to 154.6 million at the end of September from 219 million recorded in March 2024.

The huge loss was driven by the recently concluded verification of the National Identification Numbers (NINs) linked with mobile SIMs.

“The removal of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) that are not linked to verifiable National Identification Numbers (NINs) and the rectification of a major discrepancy by a Mobile Network Operator explain the significant drop in Nigeria’s telecoms subscriber base”, the NCC stated.
