November 20, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has initiated talks with the Department of State Services (DSS) to establish a stronger communication partnership aimed at enhancing public trust and strengthening the state’s security framework.
The development followed a courtesy visit by the NIPR State Executive Council, led by Chairman Dr. Manasseh Umoette, to the DSS Command headquarters in Uyo, where they met with the State Director of Security, Mr. Adedoyin Adetuberu.
Dr. Umoette commended the DSS for its role in sustaining stability across the state, noting that the decline in crime and social tension reflects disciplined intelligence and coordinated security operations.
He emphasised that collaboration between security agencies and communication professionals is critical in an era where public perception and accurate information significantly shape social behaviour.
He highlighted NIPR’s ongoing initiatives, including its PR Clinic and public lecture series, aimed at promoting responsible communication and supporting institutions in managing trust, identity, and civic engagement.
Dr. Umoette proposed joint capacity-building sessions in crisis communication, trust management, and media strategy, stressing that coordinated messaging between DSS and NIPR would help counter misinformation and maintain public calm.
In response, Mr. Adetuberu described public relations as a strategic element of national communication systems, noting that the DSS relies on credible information and effective engagement to preserve peace and stability.
He welcomed partnerships that enhance these efforts.
The DSS Director also disclosed that intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration have contributed to reduced incidents of kidnapping and violent crime, while boosting economic activity and oil production in the state.
He added that the Service is intensifying operations ahead of the Yuletide and the 2026 election season.
Mr. Adetuberu reaffirmed the DSS’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with NIPR to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents.
