May 25 (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Immigration Service has warned Nigerians against attempting to leave the country without valid travel documents, stressing that illegal migration exposes individuals to prosecution, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over irregular migration trends across Africa, with authorities increasingly raising alarms over transnational trafficking syndicates exploiting economic hardship and unemployment to lure young people into dangerous migration routes.
In a public alert posted on Monday via X, the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinlabi, said all international travel must be undertaken with valid passports, visas where applicable, and other approved immigration documents.
The service cautioned that any attempt to bypass official immigration procedures or use unauthorised border routes constitutes a violation of Nigerian laws and could attract severe consequences.
According to the statement, the NIS expressed concern over the increasing activities of fraudulent migration syndicates allegedly targeting unsuspecting Nigerians, especially youths, with fake promises of employment, education, and improved living conditions abroad.
The agency warned that many of these irregular migration schemes often end in forced labour, human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse.
“These schemes often result in forced labour, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation,” the Service stated, adding that no legitimate international travel arrangement bypasses established immigration procedures or approved border posts.
The NIS urged Nigerians to thoroughly verify all travel, recruitment, and relocation offers through official government channels before making commitments, warning citizens against dealing with unregistered travel agents or individuals promoting irregular migration.
It also advised members of the public to promptly report suspicious migration-related activities to the nearest Immigration Service office or other relevant security agencies.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security and citizens’ welfare, the Service said it remained resolute in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders while intensifying efforts to combat illegal migration networks and protect vulnerable Nigerians from exploitation abroad.
