October 08, (THEWILL) — The Federal High Court in Abuja has given the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) an extra week to ascertain the health condition of Nnamdi Kanu.
The IPOB leader had, in an ex parte motion application, prayed for an order directing his transfer to the National Hospital, Abuja, for urgent medical attention. His counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), had pleaded that the court consider the urgency of the application due to the deteriorating health of Kanu.
Justice James Omotosho had, in a ruling on September 26, ordered the NMA President, among others, to empanel a team of medical experts to examine Kanu and ascertain whether or not he is still fit to undergo his ongoing terrorism trial.
At the mention of the case on Wednesday, the lawyer for the prosecution, Suraj Sa’ada (SAN), told the court that he was informed that the medical panel had yet to conclude its assignment.
Sa’ada prayed the court for more time to enable it to conclude its task. Defence lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), did not object to the request.
However, Justice Omotosho gave the NMA an additional week to present a health report of Kanu on the next adjourned date of October 16.
Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is facing a seven-count amended charge of treason and terrorism preferred against him by the Federal Government. He has been in the detention facility of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 27, 2021, when he was extradited to Nigeria after he was re-arrested in Kenya on June 19, 2021
