May 13, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has announced plans to resume crude oil drilling at the Kolmani oil field, located along the border between Bauchi and Gombe states.
The Kolmani field gained national attention in 2019 after NNPC discovered sweet crude, natural gas, and condensates at a depth of 13,701 feet. The find was celebrated as Northern Nigeria’s first significant oil discovery and led to the launch of the Kolmani Integrated Development Project. However, drilling activities have remained dormant at the site for nearly two years.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC on Monday, NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, confirmed that preparations are underway to restart operations.
“We will continue to collaborate with the government on the Kolmani development and other similar areas. In addition to crude oil drilling, we will ensure that the gas pipeline project running from Ajaokuta to Kano is completed,” Ojulari said.
He emphasised that the renewed activities would drive economic development in the region and beyond.
“These developments will bring widespread benefits to the area, stimulating economic growth that will have a ripple effect across the country. It is essential that we return and carry on with this work,” he added.
Ojulari reiterated NNPC’s commitment to revitalising the Kolmani project, which he said would not only boost the country’s oil production but also open up new economic opportunities for Northern Nigeria.
