January 29, (THEWILL) — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has clarified that no alcohol producing company has been shut down as it commenced full enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small bottles below 200 milliliters.
The agency stated on Thursday, January 29, 2026, that the nationwide exercise is in line with its public health mandate and a resolution of the Senate aimed at reducing alcohol misuse among children and adolescents.
In a statement, NAFDAC explained that the restriction applies specifically to spirit drinks in sachets and PET or glass bottles with volumes below 200ml. Alcoholic beverages in larger containers remain approved for production and sale.
The agency noted that the low cost and ease of concealment of these small packages have led to increased underage access and associated social issues, including road accidents and addiction.
The enforcement is being carried out with the support of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. NAFDAC recalled that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with industry stakeholders in 2018 to phase out these products.
Although a moratorium was extended to December 2025 to allow manufacturers to reconfigure production lines, the agency emphasized that no further extensions will be granted.
Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, described the action as protective rather than punitive.
She stressed that the health of the younger population must take priority over economic gains and urged all stakeholders in the industry to comply with the directive.
This enforcement aligns with Nigerias commitment to the World Health Assemblys global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol.
