January 12, (THEWILL) — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has assured Nigerians, particularly parents and caregivers, that Nestlé infant formula products sold in the country are safe and unaffected by the recent voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 12, 2026, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the global recall involved specific batches of SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula distributed in over 50 countries.
However, she clarified that the affected items were United Kingdom-specific batches that are neither registered nor authorized for sale in Nigeria.
The recall was initiated as a precaution due to the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus.
If consumed, the toxin can cause foodborne illness characterized by rapid-onset nausea and vomiting. NAFDAC emphasized that none of the implicated batches were approved for the Nigerian market.
According to the agency, the SMA range officially marketed in Nigeria is manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore and is duly registered.
Parents are encouraged to verify their products using the following NAFDAC Registration Numbers: SMA Gold 1 (B1-2783), SMA Gold 2 (B1-2780), and SMA Gold 3 (B1-2781).
NAFDAC further confirmed that both the SMA and NAN infant nutrition ranges produced for Nigeria are not part of the recalled batches.
The agency noted that this alert was issued in the interest of public health to prevent the unauthorized importation of unregistered products through online purchases or personal carriage.
Consumers are advised to rely on verified information from NAFDAC and report any suspected sales of unregistered or recalled products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
