October 02, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday said the decision to rename the renovated National Arts Theatre after Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, was a fitting tribute to a man whose life’s work has placed Nigeria on the global map of literature, human rights, and creativity.
The iconic structure in Iganmu, Lagos, now known as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, was renamed in July 2024 following a multi-billion-naira facelift funded by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bankers’ Committee in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy.
Built under General Yakubu Gowon and completed in 1976 during General Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, the National Theatre rose to prominence after hosting FESTAC ’77, the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture.
In 2020, the CBN under its former governor, Godwin Emefiele, working with the Bankers’ Committee, committed over N65bn to the theatre’s rehabilitation.
The project was carried out in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, and the Lagos State Government.
The renovation, delivered in phases, included the installation of a modern HVAC system, advanced fire safety facilities, a complete overhaul of electrical and water systems, state-of-the-art stage technology, 17 passenger lifts, solar integration, refurbished interiors, and restored artworks across the façade and halls.
Speaking at the commissioning, President Tinubu hailed Soyinka as “one of the most talented and creative minds,” recalling his role in Nigeria’s struggle for freedom and nation-building.
“Uncle Wole Soyinka is one of the world’s greatest assets. His contribution to our struggle, our nation, and humanity is immeasurable. No one else deserves this honour. It could not have been anyone else,” Tinubu said.
The President further urged Nigerians at home and abroad to project the country positively, stressing that Nigeria was destined for greatness.
“This is a country of very proud people. We know what we are. It is about us believing in ourselves. From our parents, we inherited a nation of confident, dedicated people.
“This country will succeed. Lift Nigeria, believe in Nigeria, and put Nigeria first,” he said.
