March 13, (THEWILL) – Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party remains bigger than any individual, stressing that the party’s internal challenges can be resolved if its members are willing to address them collectively.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja after the inauguration of the party’s South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee led by Elder Emma Ogidi, Diri emphasised that the responsibility of tackling internal discord lies with members, not just the leadership.
“The political will to confront those causing issues in the party is not solely the duty of the leadership. It resides with all of us as members. If we are truly committed to fixing our party, then no individual can claim to be bigger than the PDP,” he stated.
Diri, who also chairs the South-South PDP Governors Forum, maintained that for the party to remain competitive as Nigeria’s oldest political party, it must first address its internal conflicts.
“For me, we have to look inwards before accusing those outside our party. It is very easy to point fingers, but we must first fix our internal issues. Only then can we stand strong and compete with others,” he said.
The Bayelsa governor expressed confidence in the newly inaugurated zonal caretaker committee, saying it had the full mandate of the National Working Committee to address concerns affecting the party in the South-South region.
“In our zone, where PDP has four governors, we have resolved to work together. The presence of the Delta State deputy governor representing his principal and messages from the governors of Akwa Ibom and Rivers confirm our unity,” Diri said.
He stressed the need for collective leadership and collaboration with the zonal committee to strengthen the party’s position in the region.
“What we need to do now is to show leadership and work closely with the zonal committee to ensure our zone remains safe and strong for the PDP,” he added.
