April 02, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has dismissed as false a viral social media report alleging that manhole covers on the Eko Bridge in Lagos had been removed, assuring motorists and residents of the structural safety of the bridge.
The misleading message, which has been widely circulated online, claimed that iron covers used to seal manholes along sections of the bridge were stolen, thereby creating hazardous conditions for motorists and contributing to road accidents.
However, the Federal Ministry of Works has refuted the claim, describing it as baseless and capable of causing unnecessary panic among road users.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, said the report was untrue and misleading.
“It is not true. We have checked round,” Dare stated, adding that inspections conducted by relevant authorities confirmed that there was no missing infrastructure on the bridge.
He urged members of the public to disregard the viral message in its entirety, warning that such misinformation could trigger fear and disrupt smooth traffic movement along the busy Lagos corridor.
Dare further advised motorists to continue using the Eko Bridge without apprehension, while maintaining caution and adhering strictly to traffic regulations. He particularly cautioned drivers against overspeeding, stressing the importance of observing approved speed limits to ensure safety.
The controller also condemned the spread of false information, describing it as mischievous and irresponsible, and warned individuals engaging in such acts to desist.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure maintenance and public safety, Dare noted that the Ministry of Works, under the leadership of the Minister, Senator Dave Umahi, remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and integrity of all federal roads and bridges in Lagos State and across the country.
