United States President, Donald Trump, has declared an end to the ceasefire with Iran, saying Washington has moved beyond the truce despite Tehran’s request to resume negotiations.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump disclosed that the Iranian government had sought to continue diplomatic engagements but said the United States had made it clear that the ceasefire was no longer in effect.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER! Thank you for your attention to this matter”, Trump wrote.
Trump’s declaration followed a fresh wave of U.S. airstrikes on Iranian military installations across the country’s south. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the attacks were designed to “further degrade” Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Tehran of endangering one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.
Iranian state television reported explosions in several southern locations, including the strategic Abu Musa Island in the Strait of Hormuz, while authorities also claimed that debris from U.S. projectiles struck Imam Ali Hospital in the southeastern city of Chabahar. The hospital claim has not been independently verified.
The latest U.S. offensive came after Washington accused Iran of attacking commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Trump to warn that any further aggression would trigger an even more forceful American response.
“This is in retribution for yesterday’s bombing of ships by Iran. If it happens again, it will get much worse!” the U.S. president wrote in an earlier post.
