December 30, (THEWILL) — The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that the explosion at the General Hospital in Bagudo on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, was accidental and caused by overheating gas cylinders.
Authorities have formally dismissed rumors linking the incident to terrorist activity, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), or aerial strikes.
The early-morning blast hit a building within the hospital’s staff quarters, sparking widespread panic among patients and residents.
However, the State Police Command and the State Government confirmed that no casualties were recorded, as occupants had safely evacuated the building before the fire escalated.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, explained that “an inferno which overheated air-conditioning and refrigerator gas cylinders resulted in the loud explosions observed.”
He further clarified that specialist EOD-CBRN (Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) teams, alongside the Commissioner of Police Tactical Team, conducted a thorough on-site assessment that ruled out the involvement of explosives or any helicopter/aerial activity.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, corroborated this position during a briefing in Birnin Kebbi.
He emphasised that preliminary findings indicated the explosion originated from a fire incident within the staff quarters rather than an attack.
Authorities have urged the public and the media to disregard unverified social media reports suggesting a bomb or bandit involvement.
“The situation is fully under control, and the Command remains committed to public safety and transparency,” SP Usman added.
He reassured residents that additional tactical teams have been deployed to maintain order.
