July 31, (THEWILL) — In a renewed effort to curb the rising tide of social vices among youths in Akwa Ibom State, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Akwa Ibom State Directorate, has resolved to partner with the Abia State University (ABSU) Alumni Association, Akwa Ibom Branch.
The collaboration was initiated during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the alumni association to the State Director of NOA, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, with a focus on developing a joint blueprint to intensify sensitisation and mobilisation campaigns aimed at tackling cultism, cybercrime, drug abuse, and other societal ills that threaten the future of the youth and the integrity of the educational system.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the ABSU Alumni Association in Akwa Ibom, Elder Effiong Etukudoh, lamented the growing incidence of social vices within educational institutions, stating that they not only disrupt the pursuit of knowledge but also derail the aspirations of many students seeking a safe and conducive environment to actualise their potential.
He advocated for a strategic and sustained partnership with NOA, describing the agency as a critical institution with extensive grassroots structures and skilled manpower, capable of effectively communicating government policies, programmes, and developmental campaigns.
“To address the menace of social vices in our schools, all hands must be on deck”, he emphasised.
In his response, the NOA State Director, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, commended the alumni for the initiative and stressed that addressing the root causes of social vices requires a multi-sectoral approach.
“The fight against these societal challenges cannot be undertaken in isolation; it requires a concerted effort involving both state and non-state actors, schools, families, community organisations, and law enforcement agencies working together to create a holistic and sustainable solution”, he said.
He added that although the road to change may be long and demanding, rewards for a safe, supportive, and productive learning environment are immeasurable.
“With unity of purpose, we can empower our students to thrive and grow into responsible, respectful members of society, ultimately ensuring a brighter and more secure future for all”, he concluded.
