April 28, (THEWILL) — Reports alleging that President Bola Tinubu has ordered Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to resign on health grounds and hand over power to Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, are false and did not emanate from the Presidency, a high ranking presidential official and close aide of the president told THEWILL on Tuesday.
The official, who asked to be unidentifled, described the viral claims as false and fabricated.
According to the source, the President never issued any such directive contrary to claims circulating across social media and some online platforms.
The clarification follows reports alleging that the Presidency and influential APC figures had become dissatisfied with the governor’s leadership and were considering a succession arrangement that would see Hamzat complete the current tenure and possibly emerge as a leading contender for the 2027 governorship election.
However, further checks by THEWILL indicate that no official or unofficial communication has emanated from the Presidency, the Lagos State Government, or the APC hierarchy suggesting any plan for Sanwo-Olu to resign before the expiration of his tenure.
The Lagos State Government had earlier dismissed the report as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the government said Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health and continues to discharge his duties as governor.
The statement added that the governor remains actively involved in governance and continues to oversee state affairs.
