December 13, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has issued permits to 28 companies under the Nigerian Flare Gas Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP), marking a major step in Nigeria’s efforts to end routine gas flaring and advance climate action.
The permits authorise the companies to commercialise flare gas for power generation, petrochemical production, fertiliser manufacturing, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply and other industrial uses.
Speaking at the permit issuance ceremony in Abuja on Friday, the NUPRC Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe, described the development as a key milestone in the country’s energy transition agenda.
Komolafe explained that the NGFCP, which was re-inaugurated in 2022, allocates flare sites to qualified third-party operators, converting wasted gas into economic value while significantly reducing environmental impact.
He said the 28 companies had successfully completed all required commercial agreements under the 2020–2021 bid round, following what he described as a competitive and transparent selection process.
According to him, the programme is projected to capture between 250 and 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about six million tonnes annually, attract up to $2 billion in investment and generate over 100,000 jobs.
Komolafe added that the initiative is expected to supply about 170,000 metric tonnes of LPG annually, providing clean cooking energy for an estimated 1.4 million households, while also unlocking close to three gigawatts of power generation capacity.
He urged the permit holders to fast-track project execution, assuring them of the commission’s continued regulatory support to ensure timely delivery and operational success.
The companies issued permits include Ace Energy Limited, Afagaf Company Limited, AGH Lero, Almina Resources Limited, Amazon Energy Limited, AUT Energy, Beluga Asiko, Bodej Investment Limited, Cainergy Limited, Cimcmonobuo Nigeria Limited, Dawcon Consortium, Dawnwatch Limited, Fargab Limited, Folstaj International Limited, Geospectra Energy Limited, Izzi Project Limited, MMLet Energy Limited, MSN Consortium, Newgaz Integrated Services Limited, NG Lyon Construction Limited, Oaks Cluster Energy, Seal Energy Limited, Tecnis EPS International Limited, Teobell International, Terms Energies, Zipora Gas and Stelog Gas Company Limited.
