December 02, (THEWILL) — The Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has passed away.

THEWILL reliably gathered that the respected historian died on Tuesday morning at a hospital after undergoing what was described as a successful surgical procedure. He was 64.

His death was confirmed in a statement issued by Olawale Oyeweso on behalf of the family, expressing the deep sorrow felt by loved ones and associates.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, who departed this life on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at the age of 64 after a brief illness”, the statement read.

Prof. Oyeweso, a renowned academic and respected Professor of History, was celebrated for his decades-long contributions to scholarship, mentorship, and public service. He was widely regarded as an influential teacher and administrator who made a meaningful impact on generations of students, colleagues, and political associates.

According to the family, he is survived by his wife, children, and extended family members.
