July 08, (THEWILL) — The Labour Party (LP) has urged Nigerians to ignore threats to expel its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the party, describing it as the antics of individuals who had long lost their legitimacy following a Supreme Court ruling, which affirmed the expiration of their tenure.
The clarification follows recent remarks by Abayomi Arabambi, a former factional spokesperson of the party, who claimed during an interview on Channels TV that a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting was imminent to expel Obi from the party.
However, a counter-statement issued by the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC) dismissed the claim as both baseless and politically motivated.
The statement, signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser to the Acting National Caretaker Chairman, described those making the assertions as “political jesters” with no standing in the Labour Party.
“These impostors, acting on behalf of shadowy interests, intend to purport an expulsion of Mr. Obi from the Labour Party – a move as laughable as it is illegal”, it said.
The party further cautioned Nigerians and the media against taking such claims seriously, labelling them the “antics of individuals who had long lost their legitimacy following a Supreme Court ruling delivered on April 4, 2025″, which affirmed the expiration of their tenure.
The leadership reiterated its full support for Obi’s ongoing coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 elections, noting that his role was backed by an official statement issued on May 25, 2025.
Referring to those behind the expulsion as “meddlesome interlopers” whose relevance was solely built on attacking Obi, the party said, “This latest drama should be rightly seen for what it is: the desperate last kick of a dying horse.”
The statement emphasised that any authentic communication regarding the party’s affairs must come from its current leadership, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, and not from individuals “performing for their paymasters”.
