Officer Injured As Gunmen Attack Yobe NUJ Secretariat

September 19, (THEWILL) — Gunmen in the early hours of Friday attacked the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Damaturu, Yobe State, leaving a police officer on guard duty seriously injured.

Chairman of the NUJ Yobe Council, Rajab Ismail Mohammed, said the assailants stormed the premises around 2 am, shooting the officer in the leg.

“The injured officer was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital in Damaturu, where he is receiving treatment,” he said.

Mohammed described the attack as “unfortunate and scary,” stressing that it posed a threat not just to security personnel but to press freedom in the state.

“This attack represents not just an assault on a security guard but an intimidation tactic against the press corps in Yobe.

“We call on security agencies to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into this matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he added.
