June 18 (THEWILL) — The Ogun State Government has banned graduation ceremonies and end-of-session parties in all public and private schools across the state, directing immediate compliance by school administrators.
The directive was conveyed in a circular signed by A.A. Bisiriyu, Director of Education (Private Schools), on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
According to the ministry, the decision followed reports alleging that some school owners and administrators were exploiting parents and guardians by imposing compulsory fees under the guise of organising graduation and end-of-session celebrations for pupils and students.
The government said such practices were inconsistent with resolutions reached at the 2025/2026 pre-resumption stakeholders’ meeting held in September 2025 at Lisabi Grammar School Hall, Abeokuta.
In the circular, the ministry stressed that the state government strongly disapproves of graduation ceremonies and end-of-session parties for learners in all classes, whether in public or private schools.
“As a result, no school owner should organise such gatherings henceforth”, the statement read.
The government further warned that any school found violating the directive would be subjected to appropriate sanctions, signalling a strict enforcement stance on compliance across the education sector.
School administrators were also instructed to ensure wide circulation of the directive among stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and school management bodies, to guarantee full adherence.
