January 29, (THEWILL) – In a major crackdown on smuggling and illicit trade, the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, has intercepted 940 rounds of live ammunition, 3,253 parcels of cannabis sativa, and 71 sacks of contraband goods in what has been described as a record-breaking seizure.
The Comptroller of the Command, Mohammed Shuaibu, made the disclosure on Tuesday at a press conference held at the Idiroko Customs House in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Shuaibu revealed that the operation was part of the Command’s intensified intelligence-driven efforts to combat the smuggling of prohibited items across the Idiroko border corridor.
According to him, the latest haul also included 16,712 bags of foreign parboiled rice and 139,881 litres of Premium Motor Spirit all amounting to a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦1,267,504,035.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Hammed Oloyede, in a statement, said the interceptions, made between 2024 and early 2025, underscore the agency’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting the nation’s economy.
Other confiscated items, he said, included 2,002 bags of smuggled rice, 6,180 pieces of cutlasses, and 6,375 litres of PMS, with an estimated DPV of ₦77,476,185.
Oloyede further noted that the command generated a total revenue of ₦275,835,406 in 2024, attributing the feat to diligent baggage assessments, auction sales of PMS, and confiscated vehicles.
He credited the achievement to the unwavering professionalism of Customs officers and the cooperation of compliant traders who adhere to import regulations.
Comptroller Shuaibu also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, and the entire management of the NCS for their continuous support in strengthening border security operations.
Shaibu stated, “The progress made by the Ogun 1 Area Command is a testament to our unwavering commitment to national security, economic prosperity, and the protection of our borders.
“As we step into 2025, we remain resolute in our mission to safeguard the economy and ensure the well-being of every Nigerian.”
