July 14, (THEWILL) — The Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared an indefinite strike over unpaid wage arrears, poor working conditions, and the state government’s alleged failure to honour previous agreements with the workforce.
The industrial action, which began on Monday, follows a resolution reached at the General Parliament of Ogun State Civil/Public Service Workers held at the Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
In a joint statement signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Hameed-Benco Ademola, and the State Secretary, Comrade Christian Omoneh, the union directed all public servants in the state to down tools with immediate effect until further notice.
“All workers are hereby directed to withdraw their services from the Ogun State Government until they are otherwise notified,” the statement read.
The union leadership warned that any worker who flouts the strike directive would face consequences. It further urged the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration to initiate dialogue without delay to address the concerns of the state’s “teeming workers.”
“The government must, as soon as possible, call for dialogue. We shall continue to keep you updated on further developments. A workforce united can never be defeated. Solidarity forever,” the statement added.
The NLC has, in recent months, expressed growing frustration over what it described as persistent neglect by the state government, citing backlog of unpaid salaries, harsh working conditions, and failure to implement agreements reached in previous negotiations.
The development has triggered calls from labour stakeholders and civil society groups urging both parties to return to the negotiation table in the interest of industrial harmony and the continuity of public services in the state.
