February 21, (THEWILL) – Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Pius Etim, who was killed when a mast collapsed during a storm at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Thursday.
The incident occurred as heavy winds and rain swept through the stadium, disrupting a praise night event organised to mark the governor’s 100 days in office. The deceased, a driver working for the event decorator, was fatally struck while attempting to salvage some decorating materials.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor described the incident as unfortunate and painful.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Pius Etim, who lost his life following the collapse of a mast during the storm at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
“On behalf of the government and people of Edo State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this difficult time,” he governor stated.
The governor also condemned members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party for what he described as callous and insensitive reactions to the tragedy.
“It is disheartening that some leaders and members of the PDP took to social media to celebrate this unfortunate incident. Such lack of empathy only shows how far the party has drifted from the people it once governed,” the statement read.
The Edo State Government has launched an investigation into the cause of the mast collapse, with preliminary findings pointing to shoddy construction work carried out under the previous administration.
“Initial investigations indicate that the collapsed mast was installed during the tenure of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. The poor quality of work done at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, which led to this tragic incident, will be thoroughly investigated. If the contractors responsible are found liable, they will face the full weight of the law,” the statement added.
The Edo State Government has assured the public that necessary measures will be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
