May 12, (THEWILL) – Governor Monday Okpebholo has vowed to initiate legal consultations to take decisive action against the Neo Black Movement, also known as Black Axe, following the recent surge in killings and cult-related violence in Edo State.
A statement signed by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, disclosed that the decision came after the self-proclaimed leaders of the group publicly identified themselves and condemned the lawful demolition of a building linked to their activities.
The statement read, “By publicly associating with the structure and its usage, they have confirmed their connection to the activities orchestrated from that location, thereby paving the way for lawful prosecution.”
The Governor emphasized that no responsible government would allow criminal enclaves to thrive under its watch, noting that the demolished building was not just any structure but a hub for planning and executing violent attacks across Benin City and other parts of Edo State.
He further stressed that the demolition was based on actionable intelligence and was carried out in accordance with the Anti-Cultism Law passed by the Edo State House of Assembly.
In response to the group’s claims of having renovated six public schools in Edo State since the Governor assumed office, the Government has demanded full disclosure.
The statement added, “The group must immediately provide a public list of the schools allegedly renovated, including their names and locations, documented proof of the renovations, and the official letter of approval or partnership granted by the Edo State Government. Failure to comply will result in legal action for defamation, misrepresentation, and unauthorized interference with public infrastructure.”
The Governor also announced plans for the development of a divisional police station on the site where the demolished cult-linked structure once stood. This permanent security presence is intended to serve as a deterrent and safeguard law-abiding citizens and residents in the area.
Okpebholo’s administration has warned that more demolitions of properties linked to cultists and their criminal networks will follow in the coming days. Relying on the existing anti-cultism laws, the Governor reiterated his commitment to sanitizing Edo State of all forms of cultism.
The governor said, “As the Chief Security Officer of the state, I will not sit idly by while innocent citizens are killed by criminal gangs hiding behind the guise of cult groups.
“It is my sworn duty to protect lives and property, and I will carry out that mandate decisively.”
The Governor also clarified that he has no affiliation—past, present, or future—with any cult group or clandestine organization.
He added, “I remain neutral and fully committed to the welfare and safety of the people of Edo State.
“Any cult group found operating within the state will be dismantled, and its members will be arrested and prosecuted without delay.”
Okpebholo stated, “Let it be clear: Edo State will never be a safe haven for cultists. Anyone involved in cult-related activities is advised to cease and desist or leave the state. As long as I remain Governor, Edo will remain a hostile environment for cultism and all its manifestations.”
He reiterated that the anti-cultism law is fully in effect and will continue to be enforced.
He said,?”We will stop at nothing to rid Edo State of those who threaten the peace, security, and sanctity of human life.”
