December 05, (THEWILL) – The President-General of Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Pa James Oghoroko, has reportedly died in military custody, sparking outrage over alleged torture and inhumane treatment.
Pa Oghoroko was among the community leaders arrested by the Nigerian military in August 2024 in connection with the gruesome murder of 17 military personnel — four officers and 13 soldiers — who were ambushed in Okuama in March 2024.
The Defence Headquarters had, on March 28, declared eight individuals wanted for their alleged roles in the killing of the soldiers.
Subsequently, the military apprehended Pa Oghoroko along with Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Dennis Okugbaye, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs. Rita Akata between August 18 and 20, 2024.
Community leaders announced Pa Oghoroko’s death during an emergency meeting, attributing it to torture and harsh conditions in military detention.
They also raised concerns about the deteriorating health of another detained leader, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, who is reportedly battling for his life in an undisclosed military facility.
Reacting to the tragic development, the deceased lawyer, Albert Akpomudje (SAN), expressed dismay and disclosed plans to meet with the deceased’s family to discuss possible legal actions.
Efforts to reach the Defence Headquarters for a response to the allegations were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
