November 15, (THEWILL) – As Ondo State prepares for its gubernatorial election on Saturday, November 16, 2024, the International Press Centre through its Safety and Protection of Journalists Hub, has called on journalists covering the polls to maintain professional standards while prioritising their safety.
In a statement issued on Thursday, IPC Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, emphasised the pivotal role of the media in the electoral process and the growing risks faced by journalists.
“Though this election is an off-cycle one, it remains as significant as any other election.
“Journalists covering the event must adhere to the ethics of professional reporting and be vigilant to avoid situations that could endanger their safety,” he stated.
He further advised journalists to remain objective and non-partisan, underscoring that partisanship is not limited to political affiliations but also includes the use of language, symbols, or colours that may suggest bias.
Arogundade urged media professionals to ensure they are fully accredited and adequately equipped before heading to polling stations.
He said, “Journalists should have their identification cards and press/media tags clearly displayed to avoid unnecessary harassment or identity checks by security agencies.”
“Those not assigned to cover the election should refrain from loitering around polling units during voting hours to avoid complications.”
The IPC Director also called on security agencies to treat journalists with respect and professionalism.
