CBN-POS - OPAY

April 10, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s agent banking ecosystem is entering a new phase, following updated guidelines by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to address long-standing issues such as fraud, failed transactions, and inconsistent service delivery. Introduced on April 1, 2026, the policy brings a tighter structure to Point of Sale (PoS) operations and signals a shift toward greater accountability across the network.

A key provision requires PoS agents to operate with only one financial institution. Previously, agents relied on multiple terminals to manage downtime and compare service performance. Now, that flexibility is gone, making the choice of provider a critical business decision that directly impacts daily earnings.

Agent banking has grown rapidly over the past decade, especially in underserved areas where traditional banking infrastructure is limited. PoS agents have become essential, offering convenient and fast financial services. However, this expansion also exposed operational gaps, including transaction delays and rising fraud risks.

The new guidelines aim to restore trust by enforcing standardisation. Agents must use dedicated accounts, approved devices, and operate within defined transaction limits. For customers, this promises faster transactions, fewer errors, and improved security.

In this new environment, reliability is everything. With no backup terminals, system downtime now translates to lost income. This shift gives an advantage to platforms like OPay, known for transaction speed and system stability. Faster processing allows agents to serve more customers, especially in busy locations.

Ultimately, the policy reshapes competition, placing performance, trust, and operational support at the centre of agent banking success in Nigeria.
