
April 13, (THEWILL) – One person reported dead after police in Ogun State engaged armed robbers on Wednesday, at a phone market, also known as computer village, in Abeokuta.
The deceased, one Dayo Bankole, a trader in the market, was said to have been shot by the robbers, but gave up the ghost while receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
The robbers, numbering about eight, invaded the market at about 5:30 pm on Wednesday, shooting sporadically and carting away expensive phones.
But were repelled by the police when distress call was made to ibara divisional headquarter, upon which the DPO, CSP Abayomi Adeniji, quickly mobilised his anti-robbery and surveillance teams with men of Amotekun corps to the scene.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta.
Oyeyemi said that immediately the robbers sighted the policemen, they engaged them in a gun battle, but later took to their heels as they were overpowered by the police.
He explained that the robbers were hotly chased by the police and in the process, a trader, Bankole, was shot and one of the robbers, Adeniji Sakiru, 32, was nabbed with the help of the market men.
Recovered from the arrested robber were one double barrel locally made gun and assorted Criminal charms.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, now AIG, Frank Mba, has directed that the suspect be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for discreet investigation
He equally ordered a massive manhunt for the remaining members of the gang with the view to bring them to justice
The CP, therefore, appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals, to inform the police if anybody with gunshot injury is seen in their area.
