February 28, (THEWILL) — The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has declared that there is no scam associated with its “Operation Go Cashless” initiative, confirming that the airport-wide cashless payment programme will officially commence on March 1, 2026.
A press statement signed on Friday by the FAAN Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating online that the authority’s recently issued SMS notification on the commencement of the initiative was fraudulent.
FAAN said it became aware of a counter-message advising recipients not to open the SMS link, alleging that it was designed to drain bank accounts. FAAN, however, described the claim as unfounded and urged the public to disregard it.
According to the agency, the official SMS informing members of the public about the implementation of the Operation Go Cashless initiative is legitimate and was duly disseminated as part of a nationwide sensitisation campaign.
FAAN explained that the authorised messages were circulated in partnership with MTN Nigeria to ensure wide reach and public awareness ahead of the programme’s rollout.
The agency stated that the initiative marks the beginning of a structured transition to a fully cashless, contactless payment system across all airport payment points nationwide.
“The official SMS notification informing members of the public about the implementation of Operation Go Cashless is legitimate,” the statement read, adding that members of the public should rely only on verified information issued through FAAN’s official communication platforms.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to transparency, passenger convenience, and the safety and security of airport users.
Operation Go Cashless is expected to enhance accountability, reduce cash-handling risks, and align Nigeria’s airport payment systems with global best practices in digital financial operations.
