July 01, (THEWILL) — Some prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and former Senate President, David Mark, held a high-level closed-door meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.
The meeting, which took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, was part of ongoing consultations ahead of the planned formation of a broad opposition coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Other notable PDP chieftains in attendance included former National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus; ex-Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), and Sule Lamido (Jigawa).
Also present were Senator Ben Obi, former PDP National Women Leader, Josephine Anenih; former National Organising Secretary, Senator Austin Akobundu; ex-National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan; and former National Youth Leader, Abdullahi Maibasira, among others.
THEWILL gathered that the meeting, which was presided over by Mark, focused on weighing strategic options ahead of the 2027 elections — particularly whether PDP leaders would fully merge into a proposed coalition party or retain their membership within the PDP while forming an electoral alliance.
Sources at the meeting said discussions also touched on zoning, the structure of the potential coalition, and how to rally other like-minded political figures and interest groups across the country.
