November 20, (THEWILL) -Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has defended the appointment of Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, son of former governor and current Senator Adams Oshiomhole, as the state’s Commissioner for Health.
Idahosa insists that the appointment was based on merit and professional qualifications, rather than family connections.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday, Idahosa revealed that the Senator had opposed his son’s nomination for the position.
He said, “Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and his son, like any other individual, has his destiny.
“Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor. He studied in Nigeria and went on to further his studies in the United States. He is fully qualified to be in the cabinet.
“The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from holding a position he is competent to manage. He will serve as Commissioner for Health based on merit.”
Responding to criticism about potential nepotism, Idahosa emphasised that Cyril’s appointment was made independently of his father’s influence and solely on the governor’s determination to prioritise competence in his cabinet.
“Adams Oshiomhole was opposed to this nomination.
“The decision was rooted in Governor Monday Okpebholo’s vision for Edo State and the nominee’s qualifications. This is about effective governance and service delivery, not family ties,” he stated.
The deputy governor also dismissed allegations of state capture, maintaining that the nomination aligns with the administration’s goal of delivering results-driven leadership.
Idahosa further explained his role in the administration, stating, “As deputy governor, my primary responsibility is overseeing the state’s boundary commission, but I also engage in discussions regarding cabinet matters with the governor.”
Oshiomhole’s appointment, announced last Tuesday, has sparked mixed reactions, with some lauding his credentials while others question the optics of appointing a senator’s son.
Idahosa’s remarks aim to clarify the administration’s stance, emphasising a commitment to competence over political considerations.
